Workshop Description: Our Iconography workshop is set up as an introduction to painting traditional Romanian Icons on Glass. We teach our students centuries old painting techniques in Byzantine art used on reverse glass painting. We selected specific icons for this project that each student will be able to learn the most techniques from. Including painting the face, garments, decorative backgrounds and applying 24K gold leaf. The workshop is planned that each student will be able to complete a fully finished icon during the weekend.

What to Expect: Each day begins with a lecture on Byzantine and Romanian art, giving the students a full understanding of the tradition and value of this medieval art form. During the workshop each student will learn a step-by-step process to complete a traditional Icon. The instructor Lee Vasu, will work with each individual student instructing them through the drawing, painting and gold leaf process.

Workshop Curriculum: Students will learn the main reasons for painting icons, gain knowledge of the history and painting methods of the Byzantines by creating visually stunning icons. We will plan a powerful image, composition, values, mixing colors, depth and painting application processes for reverse glass painting. Including applying 24K gold leaf techniques.

Who Should Attend: Our Iconography workshop is beneficial to all artists, from beginning students to advanced artists. Including anyone interested in learning more about Medieval and Byzantine art. This is an unusual painting technique that was primarily used in Romania through the centuries. It has a wide array of applications to contemporary artists to lean this technique by creating some visually stunning art that is not seen today.

Previous experience is not required. You will be surprised by what you can create.

Artists are responsible for the cost and booking of their flights to and from New York if a flight is needed.

Instructor: Lee Vasu is an Artist, Iconographer, Curator and the Founder of Dacia Gallery in New York City. Born in Sibiu, Romania in 1979, Vasu spent his adventurous childhood in Transylvania drawing and painting. Inspired by the stunning mosaics, frescos, and the mystical sacred Icons of the Byzantine Churches of his native land, Vasu formed a unique artistic vision of the timelessness and power of art that could enlighten and inspire generations. In 1990, Vasu moved to the United States with his family and continued to study art. He received a BA in History and Art from Kent Sate University and a Masters Degree in Arts Administration and Museum Science from the University of Akron, to further pursue his curatorial passion. Following his studies, Lee represented Romania and the United States at the European House of Arts and held his first solo exhibition at the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Bucharest. Additionally, Vasu participated in group and solo exhibitions in France, Germany, Slovenia, Romania and the United States, his work can be found in numerous public and private collections. His passion for art enabled him to curate exhibitions nationally and internationally, which inspired him to establish Dacia Gallery in New York City.
