In this body of work, Daniel Maidman tackles the troubled roles of memory and self-conception in the modern age. Through the cipher of the "unknown man," Maidman presents a life which has been shattered into fragments. Scenes, impressions, objects, and mythologies can no longer be verified or sorted. They are the puzzle-pieces of a life, but they do not fit and some of them are missing. The work is executed in an extremely restricted palette, ranging from white to silvery grey, which shifts the images into a register of dreaming, remembering, and forgetting. |
